The month end was nearing and so was his salary..He wanted to sit till late in the office..so that he can prepare himself to go back home ‘normally’..he never wanted his children to know that he was worried..or they had some financial crisis..or worry of any kind.. and some would disagree to this mode of ‘parenting’ saying that children should be made aware of matters like this so that they feel responsible..but when did he ever follow the ‘rule-book’..he had his own checklist of how to be a good parent, which he prepared out of his own instincts, and he knew very well how to stick to it..
He came late from the office that day..Children had slept by then..He gently sneaked in their room and kissed them both ‘belated’ good night..
He made this a habit..not sure if it was out of love or did he know that it held a deeper meaning..it made them feel more connected and secured..and they slept assured..without worries..
28 years have passed..but whenever they are around, he still kisses them good night..sometimes now, once in blue moon, if he forgets, children themselves make sure they give-take the bedtime kiss..its more out of habit now it seems..but deep down, its still the same..they want to feel his love, his care, his concern..and make him feel the same now that they are grownups.. not that they dont know it..but sometimes one needs to show..and he as a Father has taught them this..he never missed one chance of showing how much he loves them..
and about his habit of not sharing worries with his children..it did not work out so well in these years..it is hard for either parties to hide anything of critical importance..they still have secrets of their own..life demands it..but they hide everything except for their state of mind and their feelings..which is enough to be there for each other, help each other..without knowing the worldly peripheral reason for it..somehow unknowingly the seed of bond, connection, care bore the fruits of transparency, conversation, understanding...
